Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri has released a statement following his legal team's release of body cam footage related to an incident involving Ujiri and a law enforcement officer at Oracle Arena after the conclusion of Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals.

Ujiri thanked Raptors fans for their support before addressing the incident directly, stating the run-in with Deputy Alan Strickland happened for one reason: because he is a Black man.

Here's Ujiri's powerful statement:

Ujiri also noted he understands he is fortunate to be in a position of power, with the resources necessary to supply the body cam footage and demand justice.

The Raptors president concluded his message by saying everyone needs to “keep demanding justice” and fight for the Black community.

Indeed, the body cam footage seems to refute the notion of Ujiri as the aggressor, which is what Strickland claimed when he filed his initial suit.

Ujiri clearly presents his credential before trying to get on the floor to celebrate with the players after the team captured its first title in franchise history. But Strickland pushed Ujiri back. When the Raptors president asked why he was met with physicality and again stated his position, Strickland shoved him again. It was only then that Ujiri gave a push of his own.

It seems hard to paint the incident in any other fashion after watching the body cam footage. Yet, the Alameda County Sheriff's office said Wednesday they were standing by Strickland's original statement.

Ujiri did not address the Sheriff's office. Rather, his statement serves as another call for action.
