Team handling Kawhi Leonard back-to-backs by game basis

The Toronto Raptors are handling Kawhi Leonard playing back-to-back games on a case by case basis, which is all fine for now.

The Toronto Raptors are taking a game-to-game approach in handling superstar forward Kawhi Leonard for the team's back-to-back games this season. Head coach Nick Nurse said that this will be the plan for the Raptors moving forward, as they try to bring in Leonard slowly, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN. However, he also did say that it is still uncertain how long they will keep their two-way superstar under this restriction.

“The plan is for a little while here to not let him play [both halves of] the back-to-backs,” Nurse said. “I don't think we've decided how long that's gonna be yet. We're going game by game.”

Raptors fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Nurse said that this has nothing to do with some lingering issues from Kawhi's right quadriceps injury last season. This is just a case of the Raptors being cautious with their franchise superstar. Leonard was out for most of the year with the San Antonio Spurs last season, where he sat out for all but nine games of the regular season.

It's easy to see why the Raptors are taking it easy with Leonard. Team president Masai Ujiri made a huge investment on the 2014 NBA Finals MVP this past summer as he took a gamble to trade for the disgruntled Spurs star in exchange for arguably the team's best player in franchise history, DeMar Derozan.

So far, the returns are doing wonders for the Raptors. Toronto is currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with Kawhi Leonard leading the charge. They are also undefeated with the two-time Defensive Player of the Year active in the line-up.

Leonard, however, appeared to jam his foot in Toronto's victory over the Phoenix Suns last night. Fortunately, the injury doesn't seem to be serious.

Nonetheless, this cautious approach is just what the Raptors need to do to stay the course in this long 82-game season.
