With the Toronto Raptors a loss away from another playoff exit at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dwane Casey’s days as head coach of the team appear to be numbered. The Raptors ended the regular season as the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference but is having a difficult time winning games in the playoffs.
In the first round, the Raptors took six games to repulse the Washington Wizards. So far in the second round, they have yet to win against their annual playoffs nightmare that is Cleveland.
Being down three games to one in a playoffs series virtually means an eliminated status for an NBA team, as no franchise in league history has ever won four straight games after losing the first three in a series. And once the Raptors meet their seemingly inevitable demise in the postseason, that might also signal a coaching change in Toronto, a future that The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor envisions.
Casey, who’s been with Toronto since June 2011, is the fourth-longest-tenured head coach in the NBA, after Gregg Popovich, Erik Spoelstra, and Rick Carlisle. But after years of fans calling for Raptors president Masai Ujiri to fire Casey, the guillotine could actually drop this time, despite the fact Casey is a Coach of the Year candidate.
Dwane Casey has been the Raptors’ head coach since 2011. After missing the playoffs in his first two seasons in Toronto, Casey has managed to turn the franchise into a consistent playoffs contender, as the Raptors have made the postseason in each season since 2014.
It’s still not the end of the world for Casey and the Raptors, as they could still turn their ship around against Cleveland, but Casey’s end in Toronto isstartingg to look like a foregone conclusion.
