Toronto Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri is currently one of the more popular people north of the border. However, the man who helped lead the Raptors to the team’s first-ever NBA Finals appearance could be heading out of Toronto sooner rather than later, according to the latest from the league’s rumor mill.

Despite the fact that Ujiri helped build a roster that ultimately won the Eastern Conference in 2018-19, the longtime Raptors front office executive could be on his way to our nation’s capital en route to joining the struggling Washington Wizards.

“I would not dispel those Masai rumors about the Wizards,” Greg Brady of Toronto’s Sportsnet 590 The Fan told The Sports Junkies on Tuesday. “There’s a lot of people here that are stuck in the moment, trying to enjoy the moment. But I think there’s every chance that Masai Ujiri’s running your team, the Wizards, next season. I think that’s a reasonable possibility.”

Ujiri is now known for swapping All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan for swingman Kawhi Leonard — among other players — in an offseason trade with the San Antonio Spurs. With Leonard now leading the way for the always competitive Raptors, Toronto has finally made it over the hump while finally reaching the NBA Finals after years of missing out by a hair.

On the other end of the bracket, the heralded Golden State Warriors await as the Western Conference franchise is currently gearing up for its fifth consecutive NBA Finals appearance. Perhaps overcoming the Warriors and a NBA title could keep Ujiri in Toronto for a bit longer, though…
