The Tampa Bay Rays nearly got no-hit by Gerrit Cole. They lost to the New York Yankees on Monday, but the loss was the last thing on the team's mind. Outfielders Manuel Margot and Kevin Kiermaier both left the game because of injury.
The expectation is that both players will head to the injured list. Via the Tampa Bay Times, manager Kevin Cash said Margot, in particular, is expected to miss “significant” time due to what's currently being called a “right knee sprain.”
Kiermaier left the game in the second inning after an awkward at-bat. According to Cash, the 32-year-old outfielder aggravated a hip issue he has dealt with in the past.
“It’s been kind of bothering him for a little while,” Cash said. “Same hip that he’s had issues with in the past.”
Margot left in the ninth inning after attempting to field a fly ball. The 27-year-old ran into the wall and immediately went to grab at his knee. The cart came out for the seven-year MLB veteran.
“It’s unfortunate because (Kiermaier and Margot are) such key pieces to our club,” Cash said. “We’ll just have to, I’m sure, put our heads together and figure a way to overcome it. But it’s pretty frustrating right now.”
The Rays have been dealing with injury issues a lot this season. Brandon Lowe, Mike Zunino, Wander Franco, and Andrew Kittredge are just a few of the names that are currently out for Tampa Bay.
“Injuries are unfortunately a part of this game, but I don’t think it’s every day to this extent,” Rays starter Shane McClanahan told reporters.
“It’s been tough. We’ve lost a lot of key guys. We’re just going to have to keep doing what we’ve been doing, and that’s coming to the field, putting our head down, trying to make the best of a bad situation.”
