Real Madrid might have failed to sign Kylian Mbappe this past summer, but it appears they already have a solution in place.
Club president Florentino Perez recently spoke to Spanish outlet El Debate about the PSG star and dropped a major hint on their pursuit of him. Via Fabrizio Romano:

While this was already a possibility, Real Madrid has all but confirmed they will aim to reach a pre-contract agreement with Mbappe in January before he becomes a free agent next summer. The La Liga giants put €200 million on the table for the player in August, but the Parisians denied the chance to do business because they were poised to keep their prized possession.
Mbappe himself recently spoke on his frustration with PSG on how the entire summer saga unfolded, making it clear he wanted to leave in July, yet the club said they weren't informed he was interested in departing until the end of August. While the Frenchman did say he's happy in Paris, it's no secret he is very keen on a dream move to Real Madrid.
Los Blancos wouldn't have to pay a single dime for the 22-year-old superstar with his contract running out in 2022. The Spaniards would likely fork out a hefty salary, but getting a player of his caliber on a free transfer would be an absolutely dream.
Real Madrid also plans to try their luck with Erling Haaland, who will see his price tag lower to around €70 million next summer. Imagine a frontline of Karim Benzema, Haaland, and Mbappe. A scary sight it would be.
