Real Madrid star Karim Benzema is coming off a magnificent season for his club while also playing a key part for France in Euro 2020 before they suffered a shocking exit at the hands of Switzerland. But, that was his first time back on the national team in more than five years after being vetoed by Les Bleus because of a sex tape conviction from 2015 alongside former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

He was convicted of blackmailing Valbuena and even decided to appeal the charges. But, the Real Madrid talisman has now dropped it.

Via The Associated Press:

Benzema’s lawyer Hugues Vigier told The Associated Press that the player decided to abandon his appeal but continues to deny wrongdoing. The appeals trial had been scheduled to open June 30. The Versailles court said on Saturday that it was awaiting the formal notification from Benzema's legal team.

Vigier decribed Benzema's weariness after years of legal procedures and said the 34-year-old player “doesn't want to talk about it anymore. It's enough.”

“Karim continues to contest the slightest blackmail,” Vigier said. “He is guilty under the law, that's true. But judicial truth is different from reality.”

As noted, Benzema still denies the allegations. At this point, he's just moving on and focusing on helping France be in the best possible shape heading into the World Cup later this year. The Real Madrid striker scored their lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League on Friday and was a huge reason Los Blancos were able to win the Champions League, bagging 15 goals in the competition.
