Detroit Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon returned to Florida for the first time on Wednesday night. The veteran puck-stopper led the Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with an incredible run of form down the stretch last season. As a result, his former team extended a rather classy gesture to Lyon.

The Panthers honored Lyon's efforts with a video tribute on Wednesday night. The 31-year-old goaltender started every game of an eight-game winning streak for Florida last season. That winning streak helped the team make the Stanley Cup Playoffs before they went on an incredible run to the Stanley Cup Final.

After the game, the Red Wings goalie shared his feelings on the tribute from his former team. “It's awesome,” Lyon said, via ESPN. “That's a very classy move and I have nothing but love for my time here. I appreciate that a lot and they have great fans in a great building.”

Alex Lyon, Red Wings stay hot against Panthers

The Red Wings entered Wednesday night's contest on a roll, despite having lost Patrick Kane. Detroit carried a six-game point streak into this game. Furthermore, the Winged Wheel won five of those six games. And they would continue their point streak with a major win in overtime.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the second period thanks to Sam Reinhart and Gustav Forsling. Michael Rasmussen scored his 10th of the season to put Detroit on the board, however. In the final regulation period, Robby Fabbri scored his 13th of the season to force overtime.

In overtime, Detroit found themselves on the power play, and they didn't waste the opportunity. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin rifled a shot home off a pass from Shayne Gostisbehere to seal the win. Detroit now moves into third place in the Atlantic Division, leaping the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Lyon made 32 saves against his former team on Wednesday. Larkin told reporters that his goaltender's recent run of form has certainly inspired confidence in the rest of the team. “We've got our identity going and it's just been great,” Larkin said, via ESPN. “You are confident when your goaltender is playing like that, so it's a huge win.”

Alex Lyon and the Red Wings are on a roll as they push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Detroit concludes its road trip on Friday with a game against another Eastern Conference playoff hopeful in the Carolina Hurricanes.
