The Detroit Red Wings rookie Moritz Seider had one heck of a season. On Tuesday night, he was rewarded for his efforts by winning the 2021-2022 Calder Trophy given to the league's top rookie. It's quite the accomplishment, especially considering the lack of team success around him for the Red Wings.

After winning the award, Seider announced that his parents were not in attendance. He jokingly decided to take a jab at them from the podium.

“It's a really big honor. I didn't really prepare a speech so (I'll) just go with the flow and try not to mess it up… My parents didn't make it, they just got back from Croatia and they thought it was more important to go on vacation,” the Red Wings' rising star said during his acceptance speech.

Seider became the first Red Wings defenseman since Jim McFadden took home the trophy way back in 1948. The last Red Wings player from any position to win the award was still back in 1965 when Roger Crozier won the award. The Detroit blue-liner finished with seven goals and 43 assists in his rookie campaign. Seider joined Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes as the only defenseman over the last 30 years to record 50 points their rookie season.

The voting for the Calder Trophy was not even close. Seider earned 170 of the possible 185 first place votes. Overall, he tallied 1,853 points. Second place was Anaheim Ducks' Trevor Zegras with just 1,191 points.

Also during Seider's acceptance speech, he thanked the city of Detroit and their fans.
