Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is currently still in the hospital battling an infection which he caught after undergoing surgery to repair his broken fibula and tibia.

Due to this latest setback, Smith is not expected to be able to return for the start of the 2019 season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

“No one has been able to definitively say he is going to play football going forward,” Rapoport said (per Grant Gordon of NFL.com). “Of course everyone hopes that he is, but if you're the Washington Redskins the reality is Smith is unlikely to be ready for the start of the 2019 season.

“They know right now they do need to find a quarterback to at least begin the season with. It's just unclear whether that's going to come in free agency or potentially in the draft.”

The Redskins had just acquired Smith in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs during the last offseason. They subsequently signed him to a four-year, $94 million extension.

However, Smith’s ability to play out the remaining years of that deal seems legitimately in danger due to his concerning medical ordeal, which is devastating.

Hopefully for Smith, he can overcome this infection and resume his career, if not next season, then at some point in the future.

But as for the Redskins, they will have to look for a solution at quarterback with Smith unlikely to start the season. Colt McCoy is still under contract for next season, but the Redskins will need a higher caliber of quarterback if they want to be competitive.
