Many are assuming that the Washington Redskins will draft Ohio State defensive lineman Chase Young later this month, but former Redskins running back Clinton Portis feels the club should go in a different direction.

During an appearance on The Team 980 on Tuesday morning, Portis said Washington should take a different pass rusher:

“I’m taking my chances with Isaiah Simmons,” Portis said. “I would have to, I would take Simmons at No. 2.”

That is certainly a unique take.

The general consensus is that Young is the best defensive player in this draft class. Couple that with the fact that the Redskins badly need help with their pass rush, and Young seems like a slam dunk pick.

Simmons, a linebacker, played his collegiate football at Clemson and is coming off of a senior campaign in which he racked up 104 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and eight passes defended.

Obviously, those are superb numbers, and Simmons will surely be off the board sometime within the top 10.

But is he good enough for the Redskins to pass up Young?

As terrific as Simmons was in 2019, Young was even more dominant, having rattled off 46 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and three passes defended in what was his junior season.

Washington could always trade the pick to accumulate more assets, but the Redskins' fanbase would probably revolt if the club opted to take Simmons over Young at No. 2.

The Redskins went just 3-13 this past season.
