The Washington Redskins have a three-man competition for their starting quarterback spot this season. That competition is between a rookie in Dwayne Haskins and two veterans in Colt McCoy and Case Keenum.

The competition is wide open, but for the moment someone needs to be at the top of the depth chart. According to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com, that person is Colt McCoy.

This really should come as absolutely no surprise. McCoy is entering his fifth season with the Redskins. While Keenum has been around for a while, he's never been on this roster – and of course, this is Haskins' first year in the NFL.

That means McCoy is most familiar with the system. He's the one they should trust the most at the moment – and it's showing with this depth chart. It also means he's the one who likely needs the least amount of in-game reps to start the preseason.

With that in mind, you could expect McCoy not to get all-that-much playing time in the first game. Keenum will get a substantial amount, and Haskins should likely get the most.

However, this doesn't mean that much in the grand scheme of things concerning how the depth chart will look in week 1 of the regular season. The Redskins still have a lot to figure out. All three have solid cases for being the starter, and all three should get a fair chance to make those cases.

With Week 1 of the preseason just around the corner though, the Redskins needed to have a quarterback at the top of the depth chart. They've gone with McCoy.
