I don't know if you've heard, but Trent Williams and the Washington Redskins haven't had a fun offseason. Williams has yet to report to the team and it appears to be because of a lot more than just a contract dispute.

Due to the uncertainty of Williams, the Redskins signed veteran tackle Donald Penn. Although he hasn't gotten all the starter reps, according to Chris Roling of RedskinsWire.com, it appears Penn might have the starting left tackle job locked up.

This really shouldn't come as a surprise at all. Just a few seasons ago Penn was a Pro Bowl tackle and considered one of the best in the NFL. Washington's depth at the position isn't exactly high and Penn is clearly the best option.

That being said, there is one pretty obvious way that Donald Penn could lose the role. Trent Williams could return. It seems like a long shot but you can't completely rule it out.

The Redskins said they were open to trade talks for the tackle, which made people speculate the relationship was beyond repair. However, a few things have happened that make this hard to believe.

First is head coach Jay Gruden's firm belief that Williams could return. While a coach is always going to say this, some players have left the door open as well.

Still though, that's something you'd expect right? That should hold no weight? Well there's also the fact that the Redskins reportedly turned down a first-round draft pick for the tackle.

If they truly believed the left tackle wasn't going to play for the franchise ever again, would they really pass up on a first-round pick? That must be a very high price they have on him – a player that “isn't returning”.

For now though, Trent Williams isn't back and the Washington Redskins need a starting left tackle. They could do a whole lot worse than Donald Penn.

Don't be surprised when he's one of the best lineman on the roster.
