The Washington Redskins' addition of running back Adrian Peterson has raised questions about his fit in the current backfield. It seems Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson has a good idea of where he stands.

There has been some speculation that Peterson may not even stick around in Washington. However, Dickerson made it clear what he thinks about the backfield situation during an appearance on FS1's Undisputed:

“I'm 57 years old. Rob Kelley and Samaje, I think I got a chance to beat them out, so I give A.P. a really good chance of starting. … Adrian Peterson is a physical specimen.”

These are some bold comments from Dickerson. However, it is indicative of either the respect he has for Peterson or the lack of promise from the other players in the backfield. Dickerson's claims be a bit harsh. However, there is some truth to them.

Head coach Jay Gruden already has an idea of how the backfield is going to shake out. He made it clear that the role on passing downs will be relegated to running backs Chris Thompson, Kapri Bibbs, and potentially Byron Marshall. This means that Peterson will be competing for early-down work with running backs, Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine.

Neither players have done much to establish themselves as the team's potential workhorse. They had been on the cusp of being replaced by rookie running back Derrius Guice before he suffered his season-ending injury. Gruden admitted that Peterson's great workout was part of the reason the Redskins are willing to sign him so quickly. That said, do not be surprised if the veteran etches out a substantial role for himself in the offense.
