Should the Washington Redskins cut ties with cornerback Josh Norman? Former Redskins defensive back Fred Smoot thinks so.

Smoot feels that Norman has not lived up to his five-year, $75 million contract and that he is expendable:

“You have to ask yourself, ‘Where am I expendable?'” Smoot said during an appearance on the Redskins Talk podcast. “I'm going to look at that big cap number that Josh Norman has and that's going to make me want to release him.”

Norman is due to make $11 million this coming season, and while head coach Jay Gruden says he wants Norman to elevate his game to superstar status in 2019, Smoot doesn't even want to give Norman a chance.

“You wouldn’t go to a used car lot and try to pay new car prices, would you?” Smoot said. “At the end of the day, for what we pay for this guy, we’re not getting that return on that investment. I’m sorry, we paid too much for the car, it’s time we trade it back in.”

While Smoot makes some good points, the problem is that now would be a pretty bad time to cut Norman, as free agency and the NFL Draft are over and Washington wouldn't really have many options to fill the hole left by Norman.

Norman has spent the last three years with the Redskins, and while he has not been bad, he certainly has not been as good as his final season with the Carolina Panthers in 2015, when he made the Pro Bowl and earned First-Team All-Pro honors.
