There wasn't a whole lot to like about the Washington Redskins in 2019. Their offense was anemic, their defense was disappointing and they won just three games.

However, new defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio is optimistic about the defense going forward, saying that it basically can't do anything but play better from this point moving forward:

“In general, I’d say it can be better,” Del Rio said of the Redskins' defense, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “Obviously, 32nd in third down defense, 32nd in yards allowed, I mean just 32nd in things, towards the bottom of the league in several categories. So, there’s a lot of room for improvement. It’s interesting to me that so much is made this time of year with thoughts on potential. Potential really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t really amount to much. To me, it’s more about what we can get done and the work that we’re willing to put in and the idea that ‘look, we’re going to become a respected unit, okay?’ We’ve got to learn how to commit to doing what is best for each other and what is best for this football team. We have an opportunity.”

Del Rio certainly has his work cut out for him with the Redskins, and so does new head coach Ron Rivera and the rest of the staff.

This is a Redskins organization that has been one of the least successful franchises in the NFL over the better part of the last three decades, as Washington has made just five playoff appearances since 1993 and has won just one playoff game over that span.

The Redskins have also finished in last place in the NFC East division nine times since 2002.

But perhaps Del Rio and Co. can help turn around what has largely been a dumpster fire for most of recent memory.

Hey, in an NFC East where the division winner just won nine games, anything can happen.
