The Washington Redskins just can't catch a break. Linebacker Reuben Foster went down at the team's OTA practice today and had to be carted off, per Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network tweeted that it was a left leg injury, and that Foster was “sobbing” as he was carted off. The Redskins have been perhaps the most injury plagued team in the NFL the last couple of seasons, and this is yet another brutal blow.

Foster, an inside linebacker, was supposed to be a huge part of the defense in 2019. If he's seriously injured and has to miss part or all of the season, it would be devastating. The Redskins' receiving corp, offensive line, and quarterback room were completely torn apart by injuries last year, and they still managed to crawl to 7-9.

Because of their competence last year and the addition of Dwayne Haskins in the draft, there was some cautious optimism heading into this season. With the addition of Landon Collins and Foster, the defense was supposed to take a huge step forward. Losing Foster would be a huge downgrade to the run defense that looked very solid on paper.

Foster was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round a few years ago. His talent was never in question, but injury and off-field concerns caused him to slip in the draft. He was cut by the 49ers last season after his latest arrest, and claimed by the Redskins.

He didn't play a down with the team as the league waited for his situation to be sorted out, but when charges were dropped this offseason it was announced that he wouldn't be suspended.
