Is Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera setting up a scenario where Kyle Allen could be the starting quarterback for this upcoming season? When the Redskins traded for Allen, Rivera said that the plan was to still have Dwayne Haskins leading the offense in 2020.

Rivera said that is still the plan, but if the offseason training is canceled and there is a shortened training camp, Allen could end up having a leg up, because he is familiar with Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner's offense. Via Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated:

“If that was the situation Kyle would have a leg up on the situation, most certainly … If we were told, hey, you’ve got two weeks to go, I would feel very comfortable with Kyle because here’s a guy that knows the system, has been in the system and could handle it for us for a period of time, and we’ll see how that goes … That’s kind of the thought process behind it for us.”

The big question is what exactly will happen with the NFL offseason and the regular season plan. The NFL and other major sports are itching to get back up and running, but the unknowns as it relates to the global pandemic means that few things are certain and everything is fluid.

It still feels like Washington would prefer Haskins to serve as the starting quarterback just based on the the draft pick they used on him. But Allen could get the nod, at least early on, based on his level of experience relative to the practice time NFL teams may — or may not — get later in the year.
