It’s been over a decade since former Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor met his brutal end, but the franchise isn’t letting his memories fade. Tuesday marks Taylor’s 11th death anniversary, and the Redskins made sure to pay tribute to the fallen star.

Taylor was killed in 2007, when he was shot in the leg by intruders at his home in Miami. He died of severe blood loss. At the time, Taylor was among the league’s brightest youngsters. Taylor made the Pro Bowl a year before his death and posthumously in 2007. The latter recognition was as much a product of sentimentality as his true value on the field. Before his death, Taylor was having a great 2007 season, as he recorded 42 combined tackles and a career-high five interceptions in nine games. Throughout his career, Taylor amassed 299 tackles, two sacks, eight forced fumbles, and 12 interceptions.

Taylor’s death reverberated across the league and shocked both fans and players. In remembrance of Taylor, the NFL had all players sport a No. 21 decal on their helmets for Week 13 of that season.

Taylor was selected by the Redskins fifth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft after playing three seasons for the Miami Hurricanes football program. He was part of the legendary 2001 ‘Canes team that went all the way to win the BCS National Championship.
