The Washington Redskins have ushered in some serious depth under center this offseason. Regardless, it appears a depth chart still has yet to be made.
With quarterback Alex Smith still seemingly in the early stages of his recovery, there has been plenty of speculation regarding who will take over as the starter. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, head coach Jay Gruden has not decided on which quarterback will be first string.
“We’re not even thinking about that right now to be honest with you,” coach Jay Gruden told reporters on Thursday. “We’re giving them equal reps. We don’t really have a one’s or a two’s right now. We’re switching in the receivers, subbing them in. Doesn’t matter who’s out there for tight ends. You know, I think we’ll start to get some true first-team reps when we have a first team on offense. Right now we really don’t. We’ll start to do that once training camp hits.”
Since there is still no timetable for Smith's return, Washington invested heavily in their depth under center this offseason. Not only did they trade for former Denver Broncos quarterback Case Keenum, but they also managed to secure their potential franchise quarterback in Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. They will both be competing with longtime backup quarterback Colt McCoy for the starting job this offseason.
Although Washington was able to find their quarterback of the future in Haskins, it appears they will be looking to take a cautious approach with his development moving forward. As a result, they would ideally like for either McCoy or Keenum to take over under center to start the 2019 NFL season. Although Keenum has far more experience as a starter, McCoy is much more familiar with the offense having spent the last five seasons in Washington. It will be interesting to see how the pecking order shakes out in training camp.
