The Washington Redskins began this offseason with a major splash move, acquiring Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.
It immediately changed the franchise's direction under center, with an extremely experienced quarterback who has experienced much success and several trips to the playoffs. According to Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post, Redskins passing game coordinator Kevin O'Connell voiced that he hopes the fact that Smith has played in several different offensive schemes will help him effectively lead Washington's offense.
Smith is set to enter his 14th year in the league after leading the Chiefs to their fourth playoff berth in five years, including a second straight AFC West division title. The 34-year-old has also shown that he can still be a highly productive quarterback coming off his best statistical campaign, posting career highs with his first 4,000 passing yard season with 4,042 along with 26 touchdown passes to five interceptions and a 104.7 passer rating.
The Redskins are hoping that he can transfer over that type of efficiency and success in what should be a highly competitive division with each team improving their roster this offseason.
Ultimately, Smith has an opportunity to make his mark while holding the reins to the offense to lead the charge in the 2018 season.
