Last season, the uncertainty that Ricky Rubio carried within himself was probably the worst of his life.

It wasn’t about his status with the Minnesota Timberwolves. It wasn’t about his health. Ricky’s mother, Tona, was fighting for her life as she battled lung cancer, and it killed the young point guard even more, being away from his mother at a time like that.

In an interview for the Associated Press, Ricky Rubio revealed the struggle that he had to stomach in every single day.

“Sometimes at night during the season I was going through hell. Waking up in, who knows, Sacramento, in LA, in the middle of the night alone in a hotel and thinking, `Why am I here? Is it really worth it?”‘

“At one point when everything happened, you think what’s the best? Stay with your family? Stay back home? Or sacrifice one more time everything for one goal, which is the gold medal, and dedicate it to her.”

He could have easily left his team to be by his mother’s side, but circumstances prevented him from doing so. On May 25th, Tona lost her battle, but Ricky was beside her, and that meant a lot to both mother and son.
