RIP Masayuki Uemara. The designer of the Family Computer and the Super FamiCom has died at the age of 78.

The FamiCom and Super FamiCom, better known as the Nintendo Entertainment (NES) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment (SNES) in the West are undoubtedly some of the most iconic and historic consoles of gaming history. The popularity of the NES helped the gaming industry bounce back from its crash in the 80s. If it were not for the FamiCom and the Super FamiCom, we might not have the same games and consoles we have today.

With that being said, we all owe a lot to Mr. Uemara. Uemara's death was announced by the Ritsumeikan Center for Game Studies on Friday, December 9. Uemara was one of the founders of the RCGS, and was a visiting professor at the College of Image Arts and Sciences of the Ritsumeikan University. The obituary says that Uemara died on December 6, 2021. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Masayuki Uemara joined Nintendo in 1971, and would be with the company when it developed the FamiCom in 1983. Seven years later, Nintendo would release the Super FamiCom in 1990. A lot of good memories were made thanks to Uemara and his team, and we owe all our nostalgic moments with the NES and the SNES to him. May he rest in peace.
