The Houston Rockets had a free agent meeting with center JaVale McGee in Los Angeles and it reportedly went “extremely well,” according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

McGee is an unrestricted free agent. He played with the Los Angeles Lakers this past season. The Rockets are looking for a high-level backup for Clint Capela.

The meeting with McGee in Los Angeles went extremely well, two individuals familiar with the process said on Wednesday. The Rockets' interest was not just if Capela was dealt. McGee would be happy with his role with the Rockets, serving as a pick-and-roll target for James Harden and Chris Paul. The Rockets want greater size off the bench and the vertical spacing the second unit has lacked.

With the Lakers, JaVale McGee averaged 12.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks while shooting 62.4 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from the free-throw line. Like Capela, McGee is a good rim runner/roller who does all of his damage on lob passes. The two-time champion would likely flourish playing alongside Chris Paul and James Harden in Houston.

McGee made $2,393,887 with the Lakers. It's unclear what type of contract the center is looking for this offseason, but he will likely get a pay raise from what he made with Los Angeles.Â
