The MLB Trade Deadline is approaching, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly interested in adding familiar face Kike Hernandez from the Boston Red Sox, according to MLB.com.

Kike Hernandez would fit a niche role that the Dodgers are looking to fill, and he would have to be willing to fill that role to make a deal happen, according to MLB.com. Hernandez was with the Dodgers from 2015-2020, and signed with the Red Sox in 2021, helping them make it to the American League Championship Series before losing to the Houston Astros in six games.

The Red Sox might not be sellers at this year's deadline, but Hernandez is having his worst statistical season, with a -1.4 WAR, according to Fangraphs. Hernandez is not producing on offense, and his defense has not been good either. Hernandes has -6 defensive runs saved and -13 outs above average in 484 innings at shortstop this season, by far the most innings he has played at any position this season.

If the Red Sox want to buy, they likely will look at upgrading from Hernandez. They will need better production from the shortstop position if they want to contend. That upgrade could come in house with Trevor Story's return, but he has had elbow problems in the past, so it remains to be seen if he will stick at shortstop or stay at second base.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Hernandez. Either way, his role with whatever team he is with might be changing very soon.
