Saint Peter's made March Madness waves by beating second-seeded Kentucky in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, and now the Peacocks are a full-blown Cinderella story after beating Murray State to get to the Sweet 16.
Saint Peter's is in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history thanks to what was essentially a wire-to-wire victory over Murray State, which had entered Saturday's game with only two losses on the season.
Peacocks head coach Shaheen Holloway has done wonders to get this program to these heights, and he explained that the secret to their success lies with them taking on his identity from when he was a player. Holloway played four years at Seton Hall.
“That's how I played, right? I played that way,” Holloway said. “I played to give it 110% all the time. I tell my guys all the time, you give me 100%, I will give you 200%. I was a decent player. I'm small. People counted me out. So I had something to prove every time. So I coached that way … My thing is this: It's a give-and-take thing. If you give me hard work on defense, I'll let you play offense. That's us.
“Give me what I want on defense, offense, you can go out there. You don't come out of the game playing for me for making mistakes on offense. You come out of the game for making mistakes on defense. That's just how it is.”
Saint Peter's shut down Murray State's normally high-powered offensive attack, holding them to 34.6% from the field. The Peacocks are playing with an extremely impressive toughness and poise for such a small school, and it has manifested in this Cinderella run.
Up next will be a matchup against either Purdue or Virginia Tech. You can bet that Saint Peter's will bring it regardless of the opponent.
