The New Orleans Saints got a steal when they took running back Alvin Kamara in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. It appears they may have benefitted from the negligence of other teams.
Kamara had received his fair share of questions and requests throughout the draft process. He said during a promotion in conjunction with Uninterrupted he had even shot down a request to remove his nose ring before a meeting.
“I had a team before I went into a meeting, one of the guys came up to me and was like, ‘Well, you’re about to go in with the G.M. so, you know, he doesn’t really understand the nose rings and things like that. So you might want to — can you take them out or tuck them?’ I was like, ‘No,' Kamara said.
“Basically, if you don’t understand it or you don’t like it, then you don’t need to draft me. It wouldn’t be a good choice to draft me.”
While it may seem like a minor detail in an otherwise complex draft process, it very well could have had major implications on Kamara's stock from that point. He played a largely complementary role during his time at Tennessee, however, there was no question that he was still one of the more intriguing prospects at his position. His refusal to remove his piercing could have potentially gotten him drafted sooner.
Fortunately, it is safe to say that everything worked out for the best. The Saints clearly had no issue with his appearance, and it paid off tremendously in the form of two straight Pro Bowl nods. Kamara's willingness to stick to his beliefs has undoubtedly played a major part in his success thus far. Not to mention, his unique look has helped put a notable face on one of the brightest young stars in the NFL.
