The New Orleans Saints have been trying to nail down a contract extension for wide receiver Michael Thomas, but Thomas isn't biting, and as a result, the star has been holding out of training camp.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis does not seem too enthralled with Thomas' decision to sit out:
“(Thomas holding out) bothers me, (because) it's a reflection on the job we do,” said Loomis, according to The New Orleans Times Picayune. “In a perfect world, this would be done and we'd both feel really good or really bad about it. … I know Mike wants to be here. It's not a question of him not wanting to be here.”
Perhaps the reason why Loomis is miffed is because the Saints have made a pretty big effort to get Thomas signed.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, New Orleans has offered Thomas a deal consisting of $18-19 million annually, a contract that would make him the highest-paid wideout in the NFL.
However, Thomas seems to want to be paid $20 million a year, which would make him the first receiver in history to ever earn such a payday.
“I don’t like the fact that he has a contract, and he’s not here,” Loomis said, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “But I’m not mad at him.”
Thomas is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he led the league with 125 receptions and racked up 1,405 yards and nine touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection.
