The 2019 NFL season came to another disappointing end for the New Orleans Saints. As a result, there is plenty of speculation regarding the future of quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Head coach Sean Payton fully expects him to be back for the 2020 NFL season, via Nick Underhill of The Athletic:

“No, I see him on our field this upcoming season”

This is certainly an encouraging sign for New Orleans since it addresses their looming questions under center for at least another season. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether or not it is in the books for both sides.

Brees has taken plenty of flak for his underwhelming performance during the Saints' 26-20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round. The Saints managed to finish the 2019 campaign with a 13-3 record and found themselves one play away from keeping their championship hopes alive for the third year in a row. Some now question if it is time to move on, especially after he was outplayed by quarterback Taysom Hill.

Meanwhile, Brees has reportedly already been offered a job as a color analyst for a network starting as soon as next season. Even if he does not come back, he is still owed $21.3 million in dead money after the Saints restructured his contract to shore up some more key pieces on offense last offseason.

They will also need to start making preparations for running back Alvin Kamara's looming extension while honoring wide receiver Michael Thomas' lucrative deal.
