The Seattle Seahawks got a bad break on Monday when they learned that rookie running back Rashaad Penny broke his finger during practice. This injury will require surgery to repair and force Penny to miss three to four weeks.

Although Penny’s injury came at a very untimely manner – the regular season starts in 3.5 weeks – Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is optimistic that the former San Diego State Aztec tailback will be ready to hit the field once the 2018 NFL season kicks off, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

Carroll and the Seahawks spent a first-round pick to take Rashaad Penny off the board in this year’s NFL Draft with the thought of shoring up the team’s backfield that had greatly lost its luster in 2017.

Last season, the Seahawks were only 20th in the league with 114.0 rushing yards per game. Their top rusher then was quarterback Russell Wilson, who had to live up to his dual-threat billing to the hilt in order to keep his team’s offense afloat.

Should Penny fail to make it in time for the regular season, the Seahawks’ choice for their opening day starter at running back will come down to anyone among Chris Carson, Mike Davis, J.D. McKissic, and C.J. Prosise, though, there’s also the likelihood that the team will have a committee approach in the backfield at least against the Denver Broncos on Sep. 9.
