UConn basketball head coach Dan Hurley recently made the big decision to stay with the Huskies and turn down the Los Angeles Lakers job. The Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham after another disappointing year, and they offered Hurley a massive contract to come be their next head coach. He heavily considered making the move, but he decided to stay with UConn. Seton Hall basketball head coach Shaheen Holloway is happy for his fellow Big East coach.
“Danny’s a good man,” Shaheen Holloway said, according to an article from nj.com. “I’m happy for him, I’m proud of him. What he’s doing, it’s inspiring.”
There were a few different teams that tried to steal Dan Hurley away from UConn basketball this offseason. He has won two straight national championships with the Huskies, and he obviously became one of the hottest names on the coaching market when that happened. Hurley has made it very clear that it would take something huge to pull him away from the Huskies, and then he got an offer from one of the biggest brands in sports.
Other teams such as Kentucky tried to sway Hurley in the offseason, but he didn't give anything much attention before the Lakers offer. He loves UConn and he wants to try to win a third straight national championship. Turning down the opportunity to coach arguably the best player of all time in LeBron James and to coach one of the most famous teams in all of sports showed just how much he loves UConn.
Hurley being back at UConn will probably make things difficult for Shaheen Holloway and Seton Hall basketball, but Holloway is glad that he's returning. He knows that it is good for the Big East and that it is good for college basketball.
“He had to make best decision for himself and his family,” Holloway said. “It’s good that he’s back in our league. It’s good that UConn is back in our league, that’s good for our league. He’s one of the better coaches in the country. The coaching in this league is phenomenal. For him to get that offer, I thought it was big.”
The Big East is going to be loaded
Dan Hurley leaving for the Lakers probably would've opened the door a little bit for teams like Seton Hall basketball. The Huskies likely would've taken a step back if they lost their head coach as some players probably would've transferred out as well. However, he decided to stay, and UConn is coming for that Big East title once again.
Winning the conference is going to be extremely difficult for Seton Hall. Shaheen Holloway was asked if he thought UConn had the roster for a third straight national title, but he's more concerned about his own team right now.
“I’m concerned with our roster,” Holloway said. “And trying to compete against this monster of a league.”
Holloway has the right mindset going into the season. He knows that it's going to be difficult, but he should have a solid squad. With Hurley back at UConn and the Huskies having won two national titles in a row, they are obviously the team to be beat in both the Big East and the country.
