In what was perhaps the most entertaining moment of a highly entertaining game overall, Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors and Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers got tangled up under the basket after a missed field goal. Then the unusual part happened.

As you can see, Simmons elbows Lowry in a highly sensitive area of a man’s anatomy, and the Raptors guard crumples into a heap on the ground due to the likely throbbing pain he’s experienced below the belt. Of course, one could excuse Simmons for pulling this move, as Lowry was resting what is widely regarded as the heftiest rump in the NBA (non-Guerschon Yabusele edition) atop Simmons’s head. Not unexpectedly, Simmons wanted to retaliate for having someone’s nether cheeks touching his upper cheeks on the basketball court, and so he swings his arm accordingly.

On the replay, while certainly damning, it seems that Simmons simply wanted to push whoever was planting their derriere on his head out of the way. Instead, his elbow extends and Lowry’s voice likely shifted up an octave or two at that moment.

This was certainly deserving of a flagrant foul, but as the television replay showed, the referee was unable to see what happened as it occurred, so it just ended up being a “play on.”

Perhaps this foul will be upgraded after the game, but for now, the Sixers – and Simmons – are scot-free. Lowry’s “marbles” cannot say the same.
