New Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers says he's going to go by Glenn Rivers since there is only one “Doc” in Philly.

One of the best players in NBA history, Julius “Dr. J” Erving was one of Rivers' idols growing up. Since the basketball legend is revered in Philly, Rivers says he's going to retire his nickname of “Doc” Rivers now that he's coaching the Sixers.

“I’m Glenn with you and I’m fine with that, because I actually agree with that,” Rivers said Monday in an interview with longtime Sixers broadcaster Marc Zumoff, who’s always referred to the 58-year-old by his birth name, via NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“There’s only one Doc in town.”

The Sixers hired Rivers after the Chicago native parted ways with the Los Angeles Clippers. Reports have claimed that Rivers signed a five-year deal with the Sixers.

Philly got swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2020 playoffs at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The Sixers played without All-Star Ben Simmons, who was out due to knee surgery.

While Simmons and Joel Embiid are undoubtedly two of the best players in the NBA, their fit with each other is still in question since Simmons can't shoot the ball and that creates a lack of floor spacing when the two All-Stars share the floor.

Rivers, though, is excited to work with both youngsters and bring the Sixers back to prominence. The Philly franchise hasn't been to the NBA Finals since 2001 when Allen Iverson won the MVP award in the regular season and guided the team to a Game 1 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
