Shortly after 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, news came down the wire stating that Philadelphia 76ers rookie Zhaire Smith suffered a left foot injury while participating in a skills and development camp with Tim Grgurich in Las Vegas.

According to a report from Keith Smith of RealGM, Zhaire, who's injury occurred on Monday, is on his way back to Philadelphia for further testing and evaluation.

The Sixers released an official update on Smith's condition. An official diagnosis is expected to be given in the next few days.

Smith, 19, made six appearances with the Sixers in this year's Summer League tournament, racking up averages of 7.7 points on 32 percent shooting, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game.

In his 37 games played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Smith averaged 11.3 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the field (45.0 percent from beyond the arc), 5.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 28.4 minutes per outing.

Smith was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 16th overall pick in this year's NBA draft. He was then traded to Philadelphia for Mikal Bridges.

For whatever reason, several of Philly's first-round picks have suffered injuries before starting their NBA careers.

Via Brandon Apter of ESPN 92.3 FM:

“Nerlens Noel missed his first season with a knee injury, Joel Embiid missed two full seasons with foot injuries, Ben Simmons sat his entire first year after suffering a Jones fracture in his foot and Markelle Fultz had a combination of a shoulder issue and the yips. Oh, and let's not forget Landry Shamet had to sit out for the majority of Summer League with a sprained ankle.”

Hopefully, Smith's injury isn't too serious, and he'll be able to recover before the season starts. Be sure to keep your browsers locked on ClutchPoints for more updates on this topic as they become available.
