Throughout his career in which he has played over 17,000 minutes across eight seasons, Greg Monroe has only attempted 16 career three-pointers, six of which were considered heaves at the buzzer. On Wednesday between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Chicago Bulls,  however, Moose hit a 3-pointer for the first time ever.

As you can see, Monroe swished it cleanly after calmly stepping up off the catch. He looked as though he was a born shooter, so the fact that that was the first of his career is even more shocking. Even more remarkable is the fact that his 3-pointer came directly after veteran big man Amir Johnson also splashed one.

During the course of that quarter, the Sixers went up by 30 points against the Bulls, so you can understand why the big guys were getting trigger-happy.

Monroe was recently signed by the Sixers to shore up the team’s big man rotation ahead of the playoffs. He has been on five different teams over the past two seasons, including two separate stints with the Boston Celtics.

Philly, who already have a myriad of big men including Amir Johnson and Boban Marjanovic, would probably be better served with more depth in the backcourt, but Sixers general manager Elton Brand obtained Monroe as a possible hedge against the loss of All-Star center Joel Embiid.

Monroe is known as a plodding, back-to-the-basket big man in today’s more fast-paced NBA landscape, but there is still a niche for players of Monroe’s style.
