The 2021-22 season didn't go quite as planned for Chelsea. Sure, they're walking away with two, possibly three trophies, but this was supposed to be the season Thomas Tuchel's side joined the title race. It's been an even more tumultuous past couple months, with the sanctions placed on former owner Roman Abramovich completely killing any ability the club had to maintain form. They nearly returned to the Champions League semifinal anyway, but unfortunately Karim Benzema, as he usually does, had other ideas.

Now, with a consortium headed by Los Angeles Dodgers owner Todd Boehly set to complete a takeover of the club, Chelsea can look to the summer with wide eyes and an open wallet. There will be work to do, as the sanctions kept Chelsea from negotiating with the likes of Antonio Rüdiger, who is confirmed to be leaving for Real Madrid. They also lost out on Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso who appear to be headed for Barcelona.

With the task at hand known and prepared for, let's look ahead at three moves Chelsea must make during the summer transfer window.

3 Moves Chelsea Must Make During Summer Transfer Window

1. Sign Jules Koundé

There have been rumors that a deal with Sevilla for Jules Koundé has already been agreed in principle, but for now those are just rumors. In fact, this deal almost happened last summer, but Chelsea and Sevilla weren't able to agree a fee.

No matter, there's a whole summer ahead of us to get to that point. Koundé is one of the best young center backs in the world right now. He may honestly be an improvement over Rüdiger. No other big clubs seem to be chasing the 23-year-old too hard, so this signing is Chelsea's to lose, and Todd Boehly does not want to lose, per rumors.

Koundé would offer the kind of defensive cover on the right of the back three that would allow Reece James to do what he does best in attacking areas. It's a similar kind of setup that Liverpool use with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Even though that's in a back four.

2. Sign Aurélien Tchouameni

The signing of Aurelian Tchouameni would be by far the toughest of the three listed here to complete. Chelsea are one of many huge clubs chasing the Monaco youngster's signature. As of now, Chelsea join Real Madrid and Liverpool at the front of the pack to sign him. Reports are that Todd Boehly wants to make Tchouameni's signing a priority, though they are tracking others, such as PSV's Ibrahim Sangare in case they can't land him, but that's not why we're here.

If Chelsea can sign Tchouameni, they'll be locking down one of the best young midfielders in the world. The Blues should be able to compete for trophies with him for years to come. To underscore this, one needs only to glance at Tchouameni's stats, where you can see he provides an average of 2.09 shot-creating actions per 90, which is better than that of even Declan Rice, and is comparable to Jorginho, despite being eight years his junior.

This type of signing would be a statement of intent for the new ownership. Pulling off a signing this coveted by other clubs of that stature shows the rest of them that Chelsea are not here to sit around and play second fiddle to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, they're here to compete for and win every trophy they have presented before them.

3. Sign Ivan Perisic

Another potential signing that has been rumored to be completed but not confirmed, Ivan Perisic has been one of the best wingbacks in the world for a few years now. Sure he's 33, but he'd be coming to Chelsea for free. Even at his age, from wingback, he provided 12 goals and assists for Inter this season, which is a full three goals and assists more than any season Marcos Alonso has had in West London. Thomas Tuchel has been a vocal fan of his for years. That can only help him out in the Chelsea dressing room.

He'd be the immediate replacement for Marcos Alonso. He may even be an improvement depending how he's used and how often he's used once Ben Chilwell has returned from his season long injury. Even if he's just a plug and play sub for either Chilwell or Reece James over the course of the season, that's quite the valuable asset for Thomas Tuchel to have. It allows him not to need to play his attackers like Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi at the wingback spot if he wants attacking mindsets on the field.
