Liverpool gave it a run against Manchester City, but it ended up falling short by a mere one point in this season’s final Premier League standings.
At one point during matchday 38, it seemed as if Liverpool was going to shock the footballing world and leapfrog Manchester City to win the Premier League. However, Pep Guardiola’s side mustered up a 2-0 home comeback against Aston Villa to prevent what would have been an all-time collapse in English football history.
For Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, as he touched on after the 3-1 win over Wolverhampton, finishing second is all too familiar in his managerial career.
“[Finishing second] is the story of my life,” Klopp said. “I’m still record holder for not getting promoted in Germany with the highest points tally. You need to get more points than any other teams, but we didn’t do that.
“You can’t do more than give your absolute best and that’s what the boys did again. We chased the best team in the world to the wire, that’s absolutely special. We’ll build a team again and go again.”
Klopp finished in second place to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich three different times during his run as Borussia Dortmund manager. In his ongoing tenure at Liverpool, he has capped off at the two-spot in the final league standings twice.
The Premier League powerhouse will now shift its attention to the upcoming 2022 UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid.
