Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly frustrated after Liverpool handed his Manchester United their biggest loss of the 2021-22 Premier League season, but he knows very well they have no one to blame but themselves.
After the 5-0 thrashing they received in front of their home fans at Old Trafford, Ronaldo took to social media to share his disappointment over the defeat. He also apologized to the Manchester United fans for not being able to deliver despite their huge support before promising to play better the next time around.
“Sometimes the result is not the one we fight for. Sometimes the score is not the one we want. And this is on us, only on us, because there’s no one else to blame. Our fans were, once again, amazing in their constant support. They deserve better than this, much better, and it’s up to us to deliver. The time is now!” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.
The Red Devils went behind Liverpool 2-0 within 15 minutes of the game after Naby Keita and Diogo Jota found the back of net rather easily. Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of Manchester United struggled against the high-octane attack of Jurgen Klopp's men, and right before halftime, Mohamed Salah made it 4-0 with a brace.
Salah wasn't done there, though, as he quickly made it 5-0 at the restart to the disappointment of the home fans. Much of the crowd left their seats after Salah completed his hat-trick–a first from a visiting player in Old Trafford since 1991.
It didn't help Manchester United that Paul Pogba was sent off at the 60th-minute mark for lunging on Keita, who was stretchered off the field. Pogba got a straight red card and left United with just 10 man to attempt a comeback–which, obviously, they failed to do.

It was an absolute mess for the Red Devils as they looked out of sorts throughout. The defense just wasn't there, as they let Klopp's men have their way throughout.
Unfortunately for Ronaldo and Co. they won't have it any easier in their next match as they face the Tottenham Hotspur, who is also hungry for victory as they try to crack the Top 4 of the English Premier League.
For his part, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that the defeat was his “darkest day” managing the team. However, he is keeping his hopes up that they can recapture their form despite the massive hit in their confidence.
“Today’s rock bottom [and we’re] low in confidence. Next week is Tottenham away, then it’s a Champions League game at Atalanta and the next team who visits us is Manchester City. We have to make sure we go into the next training session in the right frame of mind,” Solskjaer said, per The Guardian.
There were high hopes for Man U when they signed Ronaldo, but they are currently out of the running for the Champions League spots in the Premier League–with their chances of winning the title getting slimmer day by day.
The team could really use a win now, but it's up to the likes of Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Pogba to respond to the adversity.
