Sophie Turner is speaking out for the first time since it was announced she was getting a divorce from Joe Jonas. The former couple announced their split last year and The Game of Thrones star opened up for the first time about her married life to the Jonas Brothers star in her June British Vogue cover and how she felt she was living in the shadow of the popular boy band.

“There was a lot of attention on the three brothers, and the wives. Well, we were always called the wives, and I hated that,” Turner said in reference to Nick Jonas' wife Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas who is married to the eldest Jonas brother Kevin.

“It was kind of this plus-one feeling,” she said. “And that’s nothing to do with him – in no way did he make me feel that – it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band.”

In 2021, Sophie and Joe moved them and their daughter Willa to Miami (their daughter Delphine was born in 2022) where the actress said that the environment wasn't much better for her happiness.

“We were in this community full of 50-year-old men, so imagine trying to make friends on the dog walk,” she said. “I just felt like a little bird trapped in a gilded cage. It was amazing, yes, but I didn’t have any friends there.”

Joe filed for divorce in 2023 which they announced to the public in a joint statement shared to both of their Instagram accounts at the time.

“After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” they shared on social media. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

After the announcement, Turner noted that she was crushed by the rumors that she liked to party rather than to raise her two daughters with the singer.

“I mean, those were the worst few days of my life,” the actress recalled.”I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn't leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn't get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out.”

“It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother—mum guilt is so real!” the 28-year-old added. “I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you've never been a partier.'”

The actress said while they are still working on the details of their divorce — including how they will coparent their two daughters — she is shocked by the rumors people have made up during their split.

“I mean, it's unfathomable the amount of people that will just make s— up and put it up based on a picture,” Sophie told British Vogue. “A picture might tell a thousand words, but it's not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn't written, hadn't produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I'm still in shock.”
