However, point guard Jeff Teague has had a Christmas to forget.</p><p>Fans would think that professional basketball players would appreciate when a wide-open path to the basket presented itself to them, almost like a Christmas gift under the tree. Along with the addition of board-hungry Tristan Thompson, the Beantown team is in a great place to do well in the Eastern Conference and go far into the playoffs.</p><p>Last year in the bubble, the Celtics lost in the East Finals to the Miami Heat, who would go on to lose to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finale. The outstanding displays of talent from the young core, however, showed that the Cs were not a team to ignore.</p><p>With the addition of Teague and Thompson–ignoring the bloopers and SC Not Top Ten appearances they may appear in–the Celtics have put themselves in a  position to replicate or surpass the success they had last year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

I played basketball, obviously, but school wasn’t my favorite thing to do. So he pulled me into a room at Butler as a sophomore in front of my dad and he basically showed him my grades. I had been hiding report cards for some years. And basically just told me, ‘If you want the opportunity to play college basketball, you have to bring your grades up.’ And my dad not seeing my grades for a couple of years, he was pretty mad about that.”</blockquote><p>Stevens pushing for Teague to be better off the court is a coaching trait that changes the course of a lot of promising athletes’ lives. Teague understands the magnitude of what Stevens did for him and would acknowledge it to his current head coach every time they would meet as opponents.</p><blockquote>“I had to get my act together, man,” Teague said. “Basically got my focus right. And every time we play the Celtics in the past I would tell Brad, ‘Hey, thank you for saving my life,’ and he would look at me like shut up, whatever man. No, that was a big moment for me. I appreciate it.”</blockquote><p>That appreciation and history will make their relationship now working together on the same team even more important. Both Teague and Stevens hopes that it will help the Celtics get back into the title picture. This especially with Kemba Walker out to start the season.</p><p>Teague is in his first year with the Celtics after finishing the 2019-2020 season with his original team, the Atlanta Hawks. He started the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who he spent the previous two years with as well. He spent his first seven seasons in the NBA in Atlanta. He averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/teaguje01.html">10.9 points</a>, 2.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc and 87.3 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>A one-time All-Star, Teague has career averages of 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game with the Hawks, Indiana Pacers and Timberwolves. He’s no longer the All-Star player he was with the Hawks, but Teague is one of the better backup point guards in the NBA who can start if Walker’s knee acts up again for the Celtics—knock on wood.</p><p>Boston lost to the Miami Heat in the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals in six games at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble. The team has had a tough free agency thus far, as the Celtics lost small forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets and Brad Wanamaker to the Golden State Warriors.</p><p>Boston also traded big man Enes Kanter to the Portland Trail Blazers, but Danny Ainge <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-tristan-thompson-agrees-2-year-19-million-deal-boston/" rel="noopener noreferrer">recently secured</a> center Tristan Thompson.</p><p>The 2020-21 season will start on Dec. 22. However, the team still has gaping holes primarily in the guard positions which they are looking to fill in free agency with several players already in consideration.</p><p>According to <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/latest-on-knicks-free-agency-de-anthony-melton-on-the-team-s-radar-at-point-guard">Ian Begley of SNY</a>, veteran guards Jeff Teague and D.J. Augustin remain to be options for the Knicks heading into the upcoming season. Teague is coming off from his second stint with the Atlanta Hawks after he was previously involved in a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Treveon Graham in exchange for Allen Crabbe back in January of 2020.</p><p>He was eventually placed in an off the bench role behind starting point guard Trae Young and tallied 7.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 25 games played for the Hawks. On the other hand, Augustin, since Begley’s report, has signed a three-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks following four years as a mainstay on the Orlando Magic.</p><p>His numbers dipped from the previous year and recorded 10.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game through 57 appearances in the 2019-20 season.</p><p>The Knicks currently have rising fourth-year players Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. remaining at the helm for the point guard spot after waiving Elfrid Payton ahead of free agency.</p><p>Memphis Grizzlies guard De’Anthony Melton and Toronto Raptors breakout star Fred VanVleet were on the team’s radar, but both re-signed with their respective clubs.</p><p>Hopefully, the Knicks’ new decision-makers will be able to manufacture the right trades in free agency in order to position themselves to have better chances of winning moving forward.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It marked Teague’s second go-around in Atlanta, having spent the first seven seasons of his career with the franchise. Teague, the No. 19 overall selection of the 2009 NBA Draft, made an All-Star appearance with the Hawks in 2015. However, he served in a reserve role during his second stint with Atlanta.</p><p>Entering his 12th NBA season, Teague is likely looking to join a contender. The Hawks are rebuilding through a young nucleus featuring Trae Young and John Collins. At the moment, they are nowhere near contention.</p><p>Playoff-ready teams are expected to reach out to the veteran point guard. Which teams will pursue the one-time All-Star? Here are three potential destinations for Teague.</p><h2><b>1. Philadelphia 76ers</b></h2><p>After a disappointing season which ended with a sweep at the hands of the rival Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers need to make changes. They fired head coach Brett Brown and replaced him with Doc Rivers. But how can the cap-strapped Sixers—who have four players combining for over $100 million on <a href="https://hoopshype.com/salaries/philadelphia_76ers/">next season’s payroll</a>—improve their roster?</p><p>The Sixers can’t make any drastic changes without pulling off a trade, but they can add veteran free agents on the cheap. They will have to sell those free agents on the idea that they are closer to contention than what they appear. Their first sales pitch should go to Teague.</p><p>All-Star Ben Simmons will continue to spearhead the offense as the floor general. Shake Milton began the year on the bench as the backup point guard, but he eventually entered the starting five after it became clear he played best in his natural position, shooting guard. Milton mustered just 2.6 assists this season, showing that ball distribution is not his strength. The Sixers, thus, need a ball handler off the bench with playmaking abilities.</p><p>Teague could be a perfect fit in Philadelphia. Even in a down season in which he played just 24.8 minutes per contest, Teague averaged 5.8 assists last year in 59 games combined between the Timberwolves and Hawks. Teague can orchestrate the offense for the reserves, and play alongside Simmons when called upon.</p><p>The Sixers also need floor spacing. Jeff Teague, a career 35.6 percent shooter from 3-point land in his career, offers a decent option from the outside. For a team in need of a playmaker with solid (albeit not spectacular) shooting skills, Teague fits the mold for Philadelphia.</p><h2><b>2. Boston Celtics</b></h2><p>The 2020 NBA playoffs exposed the Boston Celtics’ lack of depth. Throughout the entire season, Marcus Smart was the only ultra-reliable guy off the bench. When Gordon Hayward got hurt (again) in the postseason, Smart was forced into the starting unit. This made Brad Wanamaker the team’s unofficial sixth man.</p><p>Even as the first player off the bench, Wanamaker played only 16.1 minutes per game. Wanamaker, an impending free agent, held his own relative to expectations, but he not should one of the primary players head coach Brad Stevens looks to when needing to sub out a starter in a postseason contest.</p><p>Enhancing the bench should be general manager Danny Ainge’s foremost offseason goal. Specifically, the Celtics need scoring from the second unit, something Jeff Teague can provide. He registered 10.9 points per contest a season ago, shooting 43.6 percent from the field, 36.8 percent on 3s and 87.3 percent on free throws.</p><p>Teague’s minutes would certainly decrease if he were to join the Celtics, particularly come playoff time. But for someone looking to reach his first NBA Finals, it may be worth it to sacrifice playing time in favor of winning at the highest level. The Celtics are a true threat to win the championship next season, a fact that will not be lost on Teague when making his decision in free agency.</p><h2><b>3. He could also play his way into the starting lineup if the Lakers prefer to have a traditional point guard in the starting lineup, rather than continue to use reigning Finals MVP LeBron James as the de facto point forward.</p><p>The Lakers were not the deepest of title-winning teams, to say the least, and Rondo’s departure would prove costly if an adequate replacement is not found. To aid Wiggins in this campaign, Teague took a step back so that the 24-year-old Canadian can have more opportunities at showcasing his talents. From Teague’s observation, Wiggins did eventually play well but at his expense. He doesn’t seem to regret this decision, however.</p><blockquote>“I wanted him to be the point guard and shoot all of the shots and finally make an All-Star Game,” Teague said, per <a href="https://theathletic.com/1544310/">Chris Kirschner of The Athletic</a>. “We were playing well at the beginning of the year, so I thought that maybe he could be an All-Star and get the critics off his back. He was playing at a high level, and things kind of turned. I guess I kind of shot myself a little bit because I was looking for another opportunity. It is what it is.”</blockquote><p>In 34 games with the Timberwolves this season, Jeff Teague averaged 13.2 points and 6.1 assists across 27.8 minutes. While his numbers were well-within his career-averages, Teague fell off the radar as a bonafide starting guard to a backup.</p><p>With the Hawks, he is expected to retain such a role as the team has firmly established Trae Young as their main guard and franchise player. But analysts have pointed out that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-jeff-teague-reunion-highlights-how-badly-they-needed-help-behind-trae-young/">Teague has the capacity to be a star in his role</a> as a reserve. His skills haven’t dwindled at all. After three and a half seasons in both Indiana and Minnesota, the 6-foot-3 point guard is now once again a Hawk.</p><p>Atlanta<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-atlanta-trades-allen-crabbe-for-jeff-teague-treveon-graham/" rel="noopener noreferrer"> traded for their former point guard</a> this week, sending shooting guard Allen Crabbe to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Teague and Treveon Graham.</p><p>Although neither Trae Young and John Collins ever played with Teague, the two Hawks stars reacted to the team’s trade prior to their game against the San Antonio Spurs.</p><blockquote>“It’s going to be good having him back, and I know the city’s going to love having him back too,” Young said of Jeff Teague, per <a href="http://Sarah%20Spencer%20of%20the%20Atlanta%20Journal%20Constitution.">Sarah Spencer of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.</a></blockquote><p>Collins’ reaction was short and sweet, as the 22-year-old power forward stated: “<a href="https://twitter.com/sarah_k_spence/status/1218338579287547904" rel="noopener noreferrer">First off, go Deacs</a>.”</p><p>Both Collins and Teague played their college ball for the Wake Forrest Demon Deacons. Collins played there for two seasons from 2015-2017 while Teague was there between 2007 and 2009.</p><p>The 31-year-old playmaker is no longer the All-Star caliber point guard he was when he was in Atlanta. However, as a backup in Minnesota, Teague showed that he can still be a solid contributor in this league.</p><p>In 27.8 minutes per contest, Teague has averaged 13.2 points, 6.1 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game this season in Minnesota, all while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from deep.</p><p>While the 11-year-veteran will likely not start for the Hawks, he is still a major upgrade to the bench. His performance earned him the first Western Conference Player of the Month honors for the 2019-20 season.</p><p>With the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Mavericks on Wednesday, Jeff Teague was asked about trying to stop Doncic. Teague stated that he’s ‘not really sure’ and that Doncic is ‘arguably probably the best player in the NBA right now.’</p><blockquote>“He’s arguably probably the best player in the NBA right now, so just try to make him see a lot of bodies,” Teague said, via <a href="https://twitter.com/ChristopherHine/status/1201904906975748097">Chris Hine of Star Tribune</a>. “I’m not really sure, man. It looks like no one can stop him right now.”</blockquote><p>It’s difficult to argue with Teague’s analysis. Doncic is currently leading the most efficient overall offense in the NBA while being the league’s most efficient high volume overall offensive player. That has been key in the team posting a 13-6 record despite not having Kristaps Porziņģis in a consistent rhythm.</p><p>Perhaps the craziest part of all is that Doncic is only 20-years-old and his birthday isn’t until late February. There is still plenty of room for the young star to improve and that’s fascinating to think about considering how he’s already averaging a highly efficient stat line of 30.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 9.6 assists.</p><p>Even if Doncic isn’t the best player in the NBA right now, he has to be considered within the top 3-5 at least. Sitting at 12-5, Miami is the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference — 2.5 games behind first place — and better than most expected prior to the season.</p><p>Led by the one of the biggest acquisitions of the offseason — All-Star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/jimmy-butler/96180816/">Jimmy Butler</a>, the Heat have proven themselves as a team that’ll likely be in the thick of things come seasons ends. While, it’s certainly premature to call the Heat contenders in the East, the team is playing great basketball and shouldn’t be overlooked.</p><p>Other than Butler, the Heat have been led by breakout players such as undrafted rookie Kendrick Nunn, third-year big Bam Adebayo and 2019 first-rounder Tyler Herro. However, while head coach Eril Spoelstra is great at getting the best out his players, the team could use another piece or two if they want to be true contenders in the East.</p><p>Veteran point guard Jeff Teague isn’t having the best start to the season. His 12.4 points and 7.6 assists per game are solid but both his field goal (41.2 percent) and three point percentage (25.0 percent) are the lowest since Teague’s rookie year.</p><p>With the many injuries to Heat point guard Goran Dragic in recent years, I believe Teague and the Heat could be a great match. Miami currently has no true backup point guard on the roster and while wings Justice Winslow and Butler are great ball handlers and playmakers, a guard like Teague would come in and alleviate those duties from players that aren’t usually forced to do so.</p><p>Not only that, but an 11-year NBA veteran like Teague would be perfect for a roster full of young talent in need of mentorship — especially at the guard positions. Players like Herro and Nunn are already great in their own right but they — and the Heat in general — could use more veteran talent.</p><p>While you can’t expect the 31-year-old Teague to regain his 2014-15 All-Star form, Teague is still young and talented enough to be an impact player in the league as both a scorer and playmaker. Whether he’d get the start over someone like Dragic is irrelevant because more depth and talent at a position the Heat have a need at would obviously be beneficial.</p><p>Of course, the Heat would have to take on Teague’s contract. The point guard is set to earn $19 million dollars this year which would put Teague right behind Dragic as the team’s third highest paid player — that might be a steep price to pay for a player you may primarily be bringing off the bench.</p><p>However, 2019-20 is the last year on Teague’s contract so it’s not like Heat would be put in a financial bind by taking on his contract. The Heat have so much talent on cheaper rookie contracts so they can certainly afford to take a $19 million dollar rental.</p><p>If Teague plays well, the Heat can likely resign him to a cheaper deal. He’s shooting 43.5 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from beyond the arc and 82.0 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>Minnesota enters Monday with a record of 8-8, which is good for seventh place in the Western Conference standings.</p><p>Teague signed a three-year, $57 million deal with Minnesota in the summer of 2017. He’s making $19 million this season and becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer.</p><p>The Timberwolves made the playoffs in 2018, losing to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/houston-rockets/">Houston Rockets</a> in the first round in five games. Minnesota missed the postseason in 2018-19 though, as they were never able to rebound from the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/jimmy-butler/96180816/">Jimmy Butler</a> trade drama.</p><p>It would be a cool story if Minnesota makes the playoffs this season. It’s early, but the T-Wolves are playing sound basketball on both sides of the ball. While they still have no established point guard, they have good options in Jeff Teague and Shabazz Napier.</p><p>While there’s still a minute of NBA basketball to be played, Napier has come forward and handed the starting position to Jeff Teague. He’s not afraid to hand over the spot to the vet as it gives them a better chance of winning.</p><p><a href="http://www.startribune.com/opportunity-knocks-for-new-timerwolves-guard-shabazz-napier/562301622/?refresh=true">Star Tribune’s Chris Hine</a> detailed Napier’s reasoning for his decision to cede the starting spot:</p><blockquote>“Obviously there is a point guard slot needed,’’ he said Saturday. “We have Jeff [Teague], and, obviously, I just thing with my growth throughout my NBA career, I feel this is a great opportunity for me to come in and showcase what I’ve been continuing to work on.’’“The NBA nowadays, the point guard is usually a scoring guard,’’ he said. “I’ve been a scoring guard my entire life. On top of that I’m a willing passer, able to pass the ball with my left and right hand, being able to see the court.’’“I’ve experienced so much,’’ he said. “The top of the highs and the lowest of lows. It’s a combination of everything, but I think the biggest thing is the experience of the game.’’</blockquote><p>It’s a good call for Napier, immediately getting him brownie points with his teammates. He’s not a bad baller himself. Last season with the Brooklyn Nets, he averaged 9.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.</p><p>However, Teague has run NBA offenses better for longer. He has career averages of 12.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in 10 years of pro ball.
