Looney was put into skates and got crossed as we could see on the clip that he could not recover on defense after a spectacular move by the kid. He played just five games in his rookie season, but gradually became a bigger part of Steve Kerr’s rotation over the years.</p><p>Looney played in 66 games for the Warriors during the 2017-18 season as the Dubs rolled to a second consecutive championship. He played in 80 contests the following season, seeing another minutes increase and even starting in 24 games. The former UCLA product garnered a reputation as a rim-runner who could hound the offensive glass and provide some rim protection on the interior.</p><p>The 2019-20 season provided some challenges for Looney. He missed time with a neuropathic condition and also dealt with a hamstring injury throughout the course of the campaign.</p><p>However, Looney was again a key member of the rotation this past season. He started in 34 of 61 appearances, averaging 4.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while also amassing 2.0 assists per contest. He’s hardly the most prolific asset for Golden State, but still gives the Warriors a capable big who can fill the lane and act as a baseline cutter who hunts lobs and second chances around the rim.</p><p>Most of Golden State’s offseason is likely to center around its draft plans and James Wiseman’s future with the franchise. Who knows, it’s just a theory. Looney knows better than most that once Steph gets it going for the Warriors, it’s appointment television.</p><blockquote>“I’ve been gassing him up and telling them how special it is and how different it is to see it live.”And then on Jan. 3 against the Portland Trail Blazers, Steph racked up a career-high 62 points.“For many of them, that game was the first time they got to see him actually go crazy and how he controls the game,” Looney said. “I told ’em.”</blockquote><p>A lot of the postseason successes or failures for the Warriors will ride on the shoulders of No. 30. He’s averaging<a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/curryst01.html"> 29.9 points with 5.4 boards and 6.2 assists</a> and is garnering some MVP attention with the Warriors headed for a potential playoff spot.</p><p>As for Looney and Wiseman, their return has been a long time coming for the Warriors. Wiseman missed the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-james-wiseman-kevon-looney-on-track-to-return-with-stephen-curry-vs-knicks/"> past 11 games</a> due to a sprained wrist and Looney was absent for the past 10 games due to a sprained ankle.</p><p>While Wiseman hasn’t exactly jumped out of the gates as everybody had hoped, he’s still averaging 12.2 points with 6.1 rebounds in his first year in the league. Looney was thrust into the starting lineup for the Warriors, replacing Wiseman, due to Kerr’s insistence that Looney plays better on the defensive end.</p><p>Juan Toscano-Anderson was a regular in the starting five with the absence of the two Warriors’ bigs and Mychal Mulder stepped in and took Curry’s spot in the game against the Hornets.</p><p>The Warriors will once again be at full strength and it will be interesting to see if Kerr decides to start Wiseman or Looney, or neither. The 24-year-old was in and out of the lineup for the most part, until finally succumbing to a season-ending hip injury.</p><p>Looney recently opened up about his injury-riddled season, and the 6-foot-9 forward/center admitted that at one point, his injuries already had an impact on his mindset during games:</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Kevon Looney's been cleared for full contact for a month. Had core surgery right after the season for nagging injury: "I couldn't really jump (last season), I couldn't really slide. Biggest part for me is to stop being scared. It was a disappointing run after a promising 2018-19 campaign, which saw him emerge as one of the team’s bright young prospects.</p><p>The good news, however, is that Looney himself recently shared how he’s now gotten back to shape:</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Kevon Looney says he’s feeling good and can run freely again on the floor after a variety of injuries. He had a few starts last season, so it will be interesting to see if head coach Steve Kerr will be willing to hand over the starting job to Looney once he is fully up to speed.</p><p>The 2020-21 season will be an important one for Looney, with the former 30th pick having just two more years remaining in his current deal. It is worth noting that he has a player option for 2021-22, which means that he could actually opt out next summer. The said issue kept him on the sidelines for several games during the Warriors’ shortened 2019-20 campaign.</p><p>For the eight teams not invited to the bubble in Orlando, team scrimmages are still not allowed. However, several Warriors players, including Looney, have been working out individually at the Chase Center</p><blockquote>“Is he going all out? I wouldn’t say so,” Ramasar added. “He’s probably (going) 80%. It is not because he can’t go all out, there’s just no need to right now.”</blockquote><p>By the time the 2020-21 season tips off, likely in December, the 24-year old Warriors big man should be ready to go. His agent believes the extra-long layoff will be beneficial to Looney.</p><blockquote>“It’s actually giving him a lot of time to just rest,” Ramasar added. “The body still needs rest, even as young as he is, in light of some of the procedures he’s had in the last 12 months.”</blockquote><p>Kevon Looney signed a three-year, $15 million contract in 2019, and he was expected to become the Warriors starting center before a rash of injuries. After going to the NBA Finals five straight years, the Dubs were humbled in 2019-20 by injuries. Stephen Curry only played in five games due to a broken left hand, while Klay Thompson was set to miss the entire year recovering from his ACL tear.</p><p>The Warriors, though, should be playoff contenders in 2020-21 since Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins will be leading the charge. They want the best for us, but when you hear it from a player, [there is] more accountability,” Kevon Looney said.“He (Draymond Green) wasn’t a guy who was highly touted as a superstar like maybe a KD or a Steph or even a Klay. He was a guy that was a role player that made himself into an All-Star, into one of the best players in the league, so having him as a role model means a lot more. Moreover, the 54-year-old coach emphasized that the Warriors will try to be creative in this endeavor.</p><p>To recall, Looney played in the Warriors’ opening day loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in October. After that, he missed more than a month due to chronic pain that stems from damaged or injured nerves which affected his shoulders. Come December, Looney played seven games where he averaged <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/gamelog/_/id/3155535/kevon-looney">2.7 points</a> and 2.1 rebounds across 11.4 minutes.</p><p>It has been the toughest season for the Warriors in recent memory. From being the most feared team in the NBA for the last five years, the Dubs have become the most pitied.</p><p>But amid all this, Warriors fans should never lose hope. They merely lost their stars and key players to injuries. It results in the malfunction of specific nerves and areas of the body. In Looney’s case, the affected area is his hamstrings. He shared that the symptoms always have a chance of returning but he doesn’t see or feel signs as of now.</p><p>The fifth-year big man participated in a full practice on Sunday — his first since late October. However, the Warriors are still looking to get in more practice runs before they field Looney into an actual game. He won’t play against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. And in their upcoming five-game road trip that begins in Miami on Friday, Looney isn’t expected to be game-ready just yet.</p><p>Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has tagged Looney as one of the team’s foundational piece. After all, he has helped the team win snag two of its three titles in its five-year dominance. For Warriors fans, expect the team to be extra cautious in handling Looney’s health. The goal is for him to suit and up and play. The Warriors initially sidelined him as a precautionary measure in order to not aggravate the injury.</p><p>The Milwaukee native is expected to play a crucial role for the Warriors in the upcoming 2019-20 campaign, especially after the departure of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Kevin-Durant/b0360985">Kevin Durant</a> and the injury to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Klay-Thompson/a0dc0928">Klay Thompson</a>. During media day, head coach Steve Kerr even cited that Looney might play around 30 minutes per game this season.</p><p>Looney was set to be the Warriors’starting center, but the team will likely ease him back to the rotation after missing a significant amount of time. It has caused some legitimate depth concerns for the Warriors given that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Willie-Cauley-Stein/a8540946">Willie Cauley-Stein</a> will remain sidelined for the whole month of October due to a foot sprain.</p><p>The injuries at the center position have forced the Warriors to rely on Marquese Chriss and Omari Spellman. The extra opportunity Chriss has received allowed him to show flashes of potential to the Warriors. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Draymond-Green/a6200920">Draymond Green</a> recently stated that Chriss is ‘turning a corner’ in his development, per <a href="https://theathletic.com/1279684/2019/10/09/thompson-now-that-marquese-chriss-has-fallen-into-their-lap-can-the-warriors-afford-to-let-him-go-probably-not/">The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II</a>.</p><blockquote>“I think he’s been great all training camp,” Draymond Green said. “He’s been on a couple teams, and everybody has kind of written him off. But he’s been amazing in camp, and to me it looked like he’s figuring it out and he’s turning a corner.”</blockquote><p>It remains to be seen if Looney’s status will be in jeopardy for the Warriors’ regular-season opener on Oct. 24 against the L.A. Clippers. If that ends up being a concern, the Warriors will need Chriss to continue making a positive impact beyond just practices and preseason action.</p><p>The situation that Burks is facing is that his playing time may end up being in jeopardy if he isn’t able to get healthy and prove himself. Fortunately, the issue is not serious and he is not expected to miss time.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/loganmmurdock/status/1179530354920607744" rel="noopener noreferrer">Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area</a>, Looney suffered a “minor tweak” but the Warriors don’t appear to be too concerned about it. Willie Cauley-Stein sustained a foot injury earlier in training camp, which will likely sideline him for the entirety of preseason and in their first couple of NBA regular season games.</p><p>Looney is slated to start at center for the Warriors, so losing him would have been a huge blow to the team. Luckily for the Dubs, that is not the case.</p><p>The 23-year-old UCLA product averaged 6.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists for Golden State in 2018-19.
