Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs wants to entreat people that they don’t lose momentum in these critical times for the Black Lives Matter movement.

After the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, a surge of protests and widespread dissatisfaction with the current treatment of black people in the United States erupted in seemingly every major city in the country.

Many of the protests turned violent, as police would attack innocent protesters and bystanders with no provocation – causing far more harm than good for those that are professed to be “protecting and serving.”

While the Black Lives Matter movement is still ongoing, with huge protests still occurring in many major American cities, it seems that the mainstream media has seemingly covered the protests enough and have moved on to other topics.

Popovich was quoted by Michael C. Wright of NBA.com about the importance of not letting this moment pass us by:

“As we all are well aware, it’s a seminal moment in the sense that we have an opportunity to do something transformative if we have the courage,” the Spurs coach said.

“And as with many things today’s world, interest wanes pretty quickly, no matter what the topic. In this particular situation, talking about racism it’s been talked about many, many times over centuries. And this is where we are. So, the league, the players, the coaches, the staff is very committed to keeping it up front in everybody’s consciousness. Even though everybody’s excited to go play, this is a great opportunity that we maintain the momentum because that’s what it takes.”

Popovich is a widely respected figure in the NBA and beyond, so it’s good to see him bring attention to this still-ongoing movement what with the return of the NBA in Orlando.
