Retired San Antonio Spurs legend Manu Ginobili expressed his heartfelt praise to former teammate Boris Diaw, who officially hung up his own sneakers just several days after Ginobili announced that he is leaving the game of basketball.
Diaw announced his retirement while sitting rather leisurely on a boat with fellow Frenchmen Tony Parker and Ronny Turiaf. On the other hand, Ginobili made his retirement known by posting his message on Twitter, officially ending an incredible era in San Antonio.
Ginobili and Diaw were key cogs on the Spurs team that won the 2014 championship against the LeBron James-led Miami Heat. The Spurs have been known for their selfless teamwork and bench depth, two factors Ginobili and Diaw embody so well.
However, their relationship would go deeper than the bond they shared on the court. Ginobili's close ties with Diaw is evident in the way he referred to his friend as “Gordo.” Jeph Duarte of SB Nation's Pounding The Rock explained the reference:
The two internationally competitive coffee sipping champions obviously enjoyed one another’s company, but how deep was their friendship?
In his tweet, Manu says “Thank you Gordo and see you soon!” Gordo, in Spanish, means fat. But in Latin cultures can be construed as a term of endearment, provided the recipient does not find it offensive (do not just randomly throw it out to your sensitive cousin while he’s reaching for a second helping of pie after Thanksgiving dinner).
Diaw and Ginobili have plenty of memories to look back on now that they will reap the benefits of retirement.
