The San Antonio Spurs are known to have one of the best developmental teams in the NBA, which is why it came as a shock when the franchise decided to part ways with their former first-round pick Luka Samanic on Monday.

Samanic, selected 19th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, is just 21 years and has plenty of potential. When he was picked by the Spurs two years ago, the expectations were he can develop his jumper and maximize his fluid control of his shot. Unfortunately, it seems Gregg Popovich and Co. were not satisfied with his progress.

Interestingly, after Samanic was waived, a video of him giving up on a play in their Sunday preseason game against the Orlando Magic went viral. In the said clip, the young Croatian stopped chasing Cole Anthony in the fastbreak that led to an easy dunk. As Don Harris of News 4 San Antonio hinted, it could have been the last straw that led to his dismissal.

For what it's worth, the Spurs needed to cut their roster to comply with the league's rule of having a maximum of 15 guaranteed contracts. The franchise needs to trade or waive one more player as the roster currently stands at 16.

As for Luka Samanic, he will still get his full $2.9 million guaranteed salary from San Antonio. However, if he is claimed off waivers and signed in the next 48 hours, the team who got him will be the one responsible for his salary in 2021-22, per Paul Garcia of Project Spurs.
