The San Antonio Spurs may end up seeing plenty of change within their roster in the coming months. For one, Jakob Poeltl could be on the move for the second time in his career.
HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto noted that the Spurs could garner trade interest for Poeltl come the 2022 NBA Draft. Scotto mentioned that if San Antonio decides to use its No. 9 overall selection in the draft on a center, rival teams would then be “checking” in on the availability of the sixth-year talent.
Scotto further listed centers such as Jalen Duren, Mark Williams, and Walker Kessler as possible options for the Spurs with their first-round pick.
Poeltl’s long-term future with the Spurs has been up in the air for quite a while. As it stands, he has one year remaining on his contract, as he will be owed $9.398 million for the upcoming new season.
Ahead of the NBA trade deadline this past season, Poeltl was linked with multiple teams, including the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets. The Spurs reportedly turned down an offer from the Bulls that “centered around a future first-round pick,” while the Hornets were in discussions on a trade package that revolved around the veteran center and PJ Washington.
Amid his uncertain future in San Antonio, Poeltl opened up last month that he can “imagine” staying put with the team.
At the least, Poeltl may not have a shortage of suitors ahead of the upcoming free agency period. Scotto recently noted that the Raptors have been “linked” with a move for Poeltl, who featured for Toronto in his opening two campaigns in the NBA.
Poeltl is coming off of a season where he posted career highs across the board, including in points per game (13.5) and rebounds per game (9.3).
