There is no doubt that San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. Now at the ripe age of 70, it is also a known fact that coach Pop will be hanging it up sooner rather than later. As a matter of fact, as reported by Frank Isola of The Athletic, there is currently some belief that the legendary coach intends to retire at the completion of the 2020 Olympics.

The head coach we spoke to is confident that Hammon remains in line to become the league’s first female head coach but not necessarily with the Spurs. There is a belief that Popovich may step down after he coaches the U.S. national team at the Tokyo Olympics next summer. Hammon will be under consideration for the job and with San Antonio closer to rebuilding than contending she could grow with the team. The other theory is that the Spurs would look to hire someone – male or female – with previous head coaching experience.

Obviously, the focus of the above excerpt revolves around Becky Hammon, who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Spurs. However, it's hard to overlook the bombshell that is Popovich's looming retirement.

Coach Pop is currently on his 23rd season with the Spurs, and during this time, he has pretty much done it all. Popovich has reached the pinnacle of the sport no less than five times, leading San Antonio to NBA titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and most recently, in 2014.

The 2020 Olympics is scheduled to take place between July and August of next year, which means that if the above rumor holds true, this might actually be Popovich's last season in the NBA.
