Following the San Antonio Spurs‘ addition of Rudy Gay on Thursday night, it has shifted the attention toward Pau Gasol‘s future with the team.

Gasol had opted out of the second year of his contract worth $16.2 million, making him an unrestricted free agent. However, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio-Express News is reporting the team is expected to work out a long-term deal with the 37-year-old.

Despite a slow start to the season, the former All-Star big man picked up his play as the year wore on finishing with averages of 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. He also adjusted to the role of coming off the bench for part of the season.

It will be interesting to see what type of deal that the Spurs present him given that they used a chunk of their salary-cap space on Gay with his two-year, $17.2 million deal. It would have to likely be a similar range of annual salary for Gasol in order to make it work.

This expectation could allow the Spurs to make moves to free up additional salary-cap room to sign Gasol to a more reasonable contract. All in all, San Antonio appears like they are going to be able to keep another piece to the puzzle.
