Bud Dupree received the franchise tag from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason and he plans on signing his tender. With that being said, he also seeks to receive a boost in his salary for the 2020 season. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Dupree is filing a grievance about his franchise tag.

As of this moment, Dupree is expected to make $15.82 million on the franchise tag he signed in April. The $15.82 million price tag is what is the set price for linebackers playing under the tag in 2020. But as Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette points out, Dupree could make nearly $3 million more if he were to be considered a defensive end.

Dupree's situation with the Steelers appears to be similar to what Shaq Barrett is attempting to do with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just like Dupree, Barrett was given the franchise tag and is filing a grievance to be designated as a defensive end.

However, despite his efforts, it seems unlikely that Barrett will be granted his request since he's a 3-4 outside linebacker. While Dupree is seeking to be defined as a defensive end, it's more about him attempting to be viewed as an edge rusher — not just a linebacker. Due to the league's vague guidelines, inside and outside linebackers are paid the same via the franchise tag.

Nevertheless, this past season, Dupree notched a career-best 11.5 sacks and four forced fumbles for the Steelers. After compiling the best year of his career, Pittsburgh has made it clear they want to keep Dupree with the team for years to come. But while both sides continue to work on a new contract, Dupree wants to be paid according to his true role.
