The Ben Roethlisberger era is set to come to an end for the Pittsburgh Steelers after the 2021 season. It looks like the same can be said for general manager Kevin Colbert.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapaport and Tom Pelissero, the longtime Steelers GM is expected to step down from his post after the 2022 NFL Draft and retire at some point, though it's not out of the realm of possibility that he stays on in an advisory role on a short-term basis.

Colbert's contract runs through the 2022 NFL Draft, and he has reportedly told confidants he plans to stay on the job through that major event. While he hasn't explicitly told people he's done, he has admitted that this is likely the end of the road for him.

Colbert has been running Pittsburgh's front office since 2000, before Roethlisberger even got there. The Steelers GM built two Super Bowl champions over this time and is one of the more respected executives in the NFL. The franchise has been consistently competitive under Colbert's watch, with Big Ben and head coach Mike Tomlin also playing a key role in that.

Barring a miracle, Pittsburgh is going to barely miss the playoffs in the AFC. The Steelers are currently 8-7-1 and sitting in the No. 9 spot. They need to beat the Baltimore Ravens and then see the Indianapolis Colts lose to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. Furthermore, the showdown between the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders must not end in a tie.

Crazier things have happened, but this is still a long shot. So, Pittsburgh is set to forge ahead with a new GM and QB.
