Devlin Hodges was one of the few bright spots for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. However, his run on the team’s roster is over. The Steelers are reportedly releasing Hodges to make way for quarterback Josh Dobbs, according to Adam Schefter.
The 24-year old quarterback out of Samford played eight games for the Steelers, passing for 1,063 yards while tallying five touchdowns and eight interceptions. Pittsburgh had a 3-3 record in his six starts in a season that saw them equal their worst record since 2003, when they also finished with an 8-8 record.
Injuries to quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph had head coach Mike Tomlin turning to Hodges, who is also known as Duck, and he immediately made an impact, helping Pittsburgh win seven of their next eight games after starting the season with three losses in their first four games. But after compiling an 8-5 record heading after Week 14, the Steelers ran out of steam and went on to lose their final three games to miss the playoffs for the second straight season.
Dobbs, meanwhile, returns to the Steelers, who drafted him in 2017. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, but was unable to play due to the emergence of rookie Gardner Minshew. The 25-year old, who played for the Tennessee Volunteers in college, has played in just five games, completing six of 12 passes for 50 yards and one interception.
